Summary

Riverview Elementary/Middle serves 719 students in grades PK-8 in Grundy, a small town in the coalfields of southwest Virginia, and is part of Buchanan County Public Schools. The school's overall performance has improved meaningfully over the past decade, rising from the 17th percentile in 2016-17 to the 51st percentile in 2023-24, though it has settled back to around the 40th percentile in the last two years. The student body is very high-poverty, with a free/reduced lunch rate above 100%.

Academically, Riverview shows a distinctive grade-level pattern. Its strongest results come in 5th and 6th grade, particularly in math and science: 79.1% of 5th graders were proficient in math (well above the state average of 72.4%), and 74.4% passed 5th grade science. In contrast, early elementary results are much weaker — only 54.9% of 3rd graders were proficient in reading, compared with 80.0% at nearby Hurley Elementary/Middle and 81.5% at Twin Valley Elementary/Middle. The school also struggles with 8th grade general math, where just 34.1% of students were proficient, even though the smaller group of students taking Algebra I posted a perfect 100% pass rate for the third straight year.

There are bright spots: economically disadvantaged students at Riverview perform better than similar students statewide, ranking in the 56th percentile. The clearest opportunities for improvement are early-grade literacy and math, reducing absenteeism, and strengthening support for 8th grade math and students with disabilities.

I don't like the way this school treats their disabled students,regular students,employee's or the parents of disabled and regular students. This school is only out to help people who they personal know or like. If your a nobody (so to say) then good luck getting them to work with you to your benefit. This school only operates on personal matters that help them out not on a business level to help the students and their education. Close Quote
