Summary

Brownsville Elementary is a PK-5 school in Crozet, Virginia, serving 530 students as part of Albemarle County Public Schools, and has risen to become one of the state's top-performing elementary schools — ranked #23 out of 1,111 Virginia elementary schools with a 5-star rating. The school's test scores are dramatically above district and state averages: for example, 4th-grade math proficiency is 97.6% and 5th-grade science is 92.3%, compared to district averages of roughly 72-76% and state averages in the low 70s. Even the school's weakest recent result — 86.4% on 3rd-grade reading — sits about 19 points above the state average. Chronic absenteeism is very low at 6.9%, far below the district's 11.8% and the state's 14.8%, and the student-teacher ratio is a favorable 13.4.

This elite ranking is the result of a sharp two-year improvement: Brownsville jumped from #234 in 2023-2024 to #38 in 2024-2025 and #23 in 2025-2026. The gains appear sustained, with multiple subjects now above 90% proficiency across consecutive years. Subgroup results are also noteworthy — male students rank #19 statewide and female students rank #44. Brownsville sits in an unusually strong micro-cluster of western Albemarle County schools: Virginia L. Murray Elementary ranks #11 and Ivy Elementary ranks #43, while Crozet Elementary, just 1.58 miles away, ranks #228.

Notably, Brownsville achieves these results while spending less per pupil ($13,215) than several nearby lower-performing schools, including Mary Carr Greer Elementary ($17,181) and Red Hill Elementary ($17,837). The main area for growth is equity: low-income students, about 14% of the school, rank at the 57th percentile statewide — a significant improvement from the 20th percentile in 2023-2024, but still well behind the school's overall #23 ranking.

Open Quote Great school. Dedicated and highly qualified staff. Amazing sense of community for a 'larger' school (not large by large city standards, but BES is one of the largest schools in our county). It's a 'big' school that feels small in so many ways. The administration is top notch and yet friendly. (Our principal and vice principal have impressive backgrounds and experience.) The teachers are very creative and a great team. Our PTO is very active and a positive support to the teaching staff. Great kids! And a mountain view from the playground to boot! There are so many great schools in Albemarle County - this is surely one of them. Close Quote
