Summary:

Shenandoah County Public Schools, ranked 52nd out of 131 districts in Virginia, operates three middle schools serving grades 6-8 across the county: Peter Muhlenberg Middle, Signal Knob Middle, and North Fork Middle.

Among the three, North Fork Middle stands out as the district’s academic leader, with the highest state ranking (90th out of 416), a remarkable 5.0% chronic absenteeism rate, and the lowest student-teacher ratio at 11.1. It also posts the best scores in 7th grade math, 8th grade science, 8th grade reading, and civics. Peter Muhlenberg Middle, the largest school with 535 students, is the most improved—its rank jumped from 200th to 111th in two years, with strong gains in 7th grade reading and 6th grade math. Meanwhile, Signal Knob Middle has declined from the district’s top school to third, dropping from 95th to 146th in state ranking, with particular weaknesses in 8th grade math (62.5% proficient) and 8th grade science (56.55%, below the state average).

Parents should note that all three schools perform well above state averages despite high poverty levels—roughly 83-84% of students qualify for free/reduced lunch at each school. Algebra I proficiency is a universal strength: every school posted 100% proficiency, compared to the state average of 93%. However, internal gaps are meaningful—North Fork and Signal Knob differ by more than 25 points in 8th grade science and about 19 points in 8th grade math. Spending also varies, with North Fork investing $11,335 per student versus $9,816 at Peter Muhlenberg. Chronic absenteeism ranges from 5.0% at North Fork to 12.5% at Peter Muhlenberg, still below the state’s 14.8%. Overall, these middle schools are solid choices, but North Fork leads academically, Peter Muhlenberg is trending upward, and Signal Knob may need extra support in math and science.
