Middle Schools in Page County Public Schools

Page County Public Schools serves two middle schools — Page County Middle and Luray Middle — both covering grades 6–8 in the Shenandoah Valley area of Virginia, with nearly identical enrollments of 318 and 315 students respectively. The Page County Public Schools district itself ranks 62nd out of 131 Virginia districts (53rd percentile, 3 stars), placing it in the middle of the state. Both schools have similar student-teacher ratios (10.7 and 10.9), but Luray Middle serves a much higher percentage of economically disadvantaged students, with 98.41% eligible for free/reduced lunch compared to Page County Middle's 81.76%.

The two schools have followed very different recent trajectories. Page County Middle has been on a clear upward trend, climbing from a 43rd percentile rank in 2023–24 to a 61st percentile rank in 2025–26, and is now the district's top-ranked middle school. Its overall average SOL proficiency improved from about 73.0% to 75.7% year over year. Luray Middle, by contrast, was the standout in 2024–25 with a 72nd percentile ranking and 4 stars, but declined sharply in 2025–26 to the 57th percentile. While Luray still posts strong results in some areas, including 100% Algebra I proficiency, Page County Middle now leads in 8th-grade math (84.62% vs. 70.59%) and holds a higher overall state ranking.

Both schools share notable strengths and challenges. Middle-school math is a clear district strength: both schools dramatically outperformed the state in 7th-grade math (about 74% vs. 51% statewide) and 8th-grade math, and both posted perfect Algebra I scores. Science is a consistent weakness, with both schools falling below the state average of 64.72% on 8th-grade science. Reading results are mixed, generally hovering near or below state averages. Chronic absenteeism is also above the state rate of 14.8% at both schools (18.2% at Page County Middle and 17.4% at Luray Middle). Notably, Luray Middle spends about $1,716 more per student than Page County Middle ($11,589 vs. $9,873), yet Page County Middle currently has the better ranking, and Luray's high poverty rate has not prevented it from achieving strong math results.
