Lee County Public Schools in Virginia serves 2,966 students across 10 schools—5 elementary, 3 middle, and 2 high schools—in a rural, high-poverty area where roughly 94% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. The district ranks 63rd of 131 Virginia districts with a 3-star rating. Middle schools are the district's strongest level at about the 66th percentile, while elementary and high schools average near the 41st percentile. Science is the district's weakest subject: 5th grade science proficiency ranges from 40% to 59% across elementary schools versus the 68.8% state average, and 8th grade science lags in most schools.

The district's top performer is Elydale Middle, ranking 62nd of 416 Virginia middle schools (85th percentile, 4 stars) after improving steadily for three years. Reading proficiency is exceptional—88.9% in 6th grade and 87.8% in 7th grade versus the 73.0% state average—with just 1.5% chronic absenteeism. St. Charles Elementary is the top elementary school, ranking in the 63rd percentile with 100% proficiency in 4th grade Virginia Studies and 92.9% in 4th grade reading; it also has the district's lowest free/reduced lunch rate (82.7%) and highest per-student spending ($13,624). Pennington Middle is the only school to earn 3 stars each of the last three years, with standout math results including 85.9% 7th grade math proficiency and 100% in 8th grade Algebra I.

The two high schools present a stark contrast. Thomas Walker High, despite a sharp ranking drop from the 80th to 44th percentile, still posts better outcomes than Lee High on nearly every measure—90.7% graduation versus 88.3%, 3.7% dropout versus 5.8%, and 6.3% chronic absenteeism versus 20.2%. Lee High, the district's largest school with 803 students, has the highest chronic absenteeism, lowest per-student spending ($8,468), and highest student-teacher ratio (19:1). Notably, all three middle schools beat state averages in math despite free/reduced lunch rates above 99%, showing economic disadvantage is not preventing strong math performance. Chronic absenteeism is almost entirely a Lee High issue—removing it from the calculation drops the district rate from 7.9% to roughly 2.9%.
