Summary:

Bedford County Public Schools serves three high schools — Jefferson Forest High, Staunton River High, and Liberty High — all covering grades 9–12 in a mostly rural Virginia district that ranks 35th out of 131 districts statewide.

Jefferson Forest is the clear standout by every academic measure. It ranks 83rd in Virginia (75th percentile, 4 stars), graduates 95.6% of students, and posts a dropout rate of just 2.3% — less than half the state average. It also has the lowest poverty rate in the district, with only 22.2% of students receiving free or reduced lunch, and its average SOL proficiency jumped from 75.5% to 82.9% in one year. Staunton River and Liberty both sit near the bottom 30% of Virginia high schools, with 1-star ratings. Staunton River’s standout trait is attendance: only 6.3% of students are chronically absent, the best in the district and far better than the state’s 14.8% average, despite a 72.7% poverty rate. Liberty has the highest needs overall: an 85.4% graduation rate, an 8.8% dropout rate, and 17.1% chronic absenteeism. Liberty also has the highest per-student spending ($9,864) and lowest student-teacher ratio (13:1), yet its outcomes are the weakest.

Two shared weaknesses stand out district-wide. Ninth-grade World History I proficiency is far below the state average of 72.2% at all three schools, with Staunton River especially low at 29.7%. Tenth-grade Biology is also consistently below the state average. Liberty’s 12th-grade reading proficiency (52.6%) is a major red flag compared to Jefferson Forest (95.2%) and Staunton River (93.8%). Meanwhile, Staunton River and Liberty have nearly identical poverty rates, but Staunton River achieves better graduation, attendance, and persistence — showing that Liberty’s challenges go beyond economics. Overall, Jefferson Forest offers the strongest academics and outcomes, Staunton River provides a positive attendance climate to build on, and Liberty would benefit most from targeted literacy, science, and engagement interventions.
