Locust Grove, Virginia has three public schools in Orange County Public Schools, serving students from pre-K through 8th grade: Locust Grove Middle (grades 6-8), Locust Grove Elementary (grades 3-5), and Locust Grove Primary (grades PK-2), with no high school in the city. The district ranks 86th out of 131 Virginia school districts (34th percentile, 2-star rating), and all three schools share a high-need profile with free/reduced lunch rates around 69-71%.

Locust Grove Middle is the standout performer. It ranks in the 43rd percentile of Virginia middle schools and is the only school in the city to earn a 3-star rating in the last three years. It posts strong results in Algebra I (98.36% proficient vs. 93.26% statewide), 8th-grade science, civics, and reading, and it has the lowest student-teacher ratio (13.9) and highest per-student spending ($8,103) of the three schools. Locust Grove Elementary, by contrast, has declined sharply — from the 32nd percentile in 2023-24 to the 24th percentile in 2025-26 — and now falls below the state average in every reported subject, with 5th-grade math the most concerning at 55.26% proficiency versus 72.39% statewide. Locust Grove Primary, serving grades PK-2, has no SOL test scores, but its 13.1% chronic absenteeism rate is below the district average.

The elementary school's 5th-grade results are a critical weak point, and middle school math is volatile — 7th-grade math dropped from 61.99% to 45.68% and 8th-grade from 61.39% to 48.84% year over year (though these are different cohorts). Despite high poverty, all three schools keep chronic absenteeism below the district average of 18.3%. Resources are uneven: the middle school gets the most per-student spending ($8,103) and best student-teacher ratio (13.9), while the elementary school gets the least ($7,384) and highest ratio (16.7). With no high school, long-term outcomes like graduation readiness cannot be measured.
