John Hancock Charter School

The John Hancock Charter School area includes two Utah K–8 campuses: John Hancock Charter School Eagle Mountain and John Hancock Charter School in Pleasant Grove. Together, they serve elementary and middle-school students, but they differ considerably in size, staffing, attendance, and current academic results. Both are associated with the John Hancock Charter School district, which is ranked 76th of 92 Utah districts, although this district ranking should not be treated as a separate ranking for either campus.

Pleasant Grove appears stronger on the most recent available measures. It enrolls 179 students and has a student-teacher ratio of 12.5:1, compared with 864 students and a 17.7:1 ratio at Eagle Mountain. Its chronic absenteeism rate is 18.6%, below the 23.8% state rate, while Eagle Mountain’s rate is 31.3%. Pleasant Grove’s reported 2025–26 results also suggest strong performance in many grades, especially mathematics and science in grades 3–6. For example, fifth-grade mathematics is reported at 70–88%, and sixth-grade science at 70–88%. Some results are broad ranges, below-40% estimates, or suppressed for privacy, so these comparisons are directional rather than exact. Pleasant Grove’s historical rankings were also strong, but they are more than a decade old and should be weighed less heavily than current data.

Eagle Mountain has notable strengths in upper-grade English Language Arts and science, including 8th-grade ELA proficiency of 59.2% and 8th-grade science proficiency of 53.1%, both above state results. However, mathematics is a major concern: every reported grade was below the state, with average proficiency of about 25%, and performance declined from the prior year. ELA and science are generally weaker in grades 3–6 but improve substantially in grades 7–8. For families comparing campuses, Pleasant Grove currently offers smaller classes, lower absenteeism, and stronger apparent achievement, while Eagle Mountain provides a much larger school community with promising upper-grade results but important needs in attendance, foundational achievement, and mathematics.
