Best Public Schools in Gunnison, UT

Gunnison, Utah, has three public schools serving students from prekindergarten through 12th grade within the South Sanpete District: Gunnison Valley School for PK–5, Gunnison Valley Middle for grades 6–8, and Gunnison Valley High for grades 9–12. Together, they enroll about 1,165 students, with the elementary school serving roughly half of them. The district ranks above the statewide midpoint, at the 63rd percentile among Utah districts.

Gunnison Valley School has the strongest current statewide ranking among the three schools, at the 60th percentile. Its clearest strengths are mathematics and science, especially fifth-grade math, where 60.3% of students were proficient compared with 45% statewide. English language arts results were more mixed, with only fourth grade exceeding the state comparison. The school’s 24.0% chronic absenteeism rate is a concern. Gunnison Valley Middle ranked at the 52nd percentile after improving from the prior year and performed especially well in science, including 74.5% proficiency in sixth grade. However, math proficiency averaged only 32.2%, below the state in every tested grade, and chronic absenteeism was highest among the three schools at 26.3%.

Gunnison Valley High has the lowest current ranking, at the 44th percentile, and its ranking and English language arts results declined from the previous year. Its largest academic weakness is mathematics: average proficiency was about 24.3%, well below the statewide average. Even so, the high school has important strengths, including exceptionally low chronic absenteeism at 10.2%, a reported graduation rate of 93.8%, and tenth-grade ELA and science results above state levels. Overall, the most important systemwide priority is building a stronger mathematics pathway from elementary through high school, while improving attendance in elementary and middle school and preserving the high school’s strong completion and attendance outcomes.
