Summary

Gus Winston Cain Elementary is a high-performing public school in Whitehouse, TX, serving 508 students from Pre-K through 5th grade as part of the top-rated Whitehouse Independent School District (Isd), which ranks in the 94th percentile statewide. This school has earned a 5-star rating from SchoolDigger for over a decade, consistently placing in the top 5% of Texas elementary schools with a current state ranking in the 95th percentile for the 2025-2026 school year.

What truly sets Gus Winston Cain Elementary apart is its exceptional ability to support all students, especially those who often face greater challenges. The school ranks in the 99th percentile for serving students from low socio-economic backgrounds, and in the 98th percentile for both special education students and African American students. This makes it a "value-add" powerhouse—over 52% of its students qualify for free or reduced lunch, yet the school achieves top-tier results that far exceed expectations. For example, in 5th grade math, Cain students achieved an 85.33% proficiency rate, compared to just 50.45% at H L Higgins Elementary and 52.07% at Mozelle Brown Elementary, both within the same district. This pattern holds across all subjects and grades, showing that Cain provides a uniformly excellent education.

Compared to nearby schools, Cain is in a completely different league. While schools like Clarkston Elementary (20th percentile) and Cumberland Academy Upper Elementary (8th percentile) struggle with proficiency rates often below 40%, Cain consistently outperforms them by wide margins. Within its own district, Cain has a friendly rivalry with Stanton-Smith Elementary, which ranks slightly higher in 5th grade, but Cain excels in building a strong foundation in 3rd and 4th grades. This decade-long track record of excellence demonstrates a deeply embedded culture of high achievement, making Gus Winston Cain Elementary an elite choice for families seeking a school that delivers outstanding results for every child.

Open Quote When we were shopping for a house, all the ratings sites had Cain as one of the best public elementary school in the Tyler Area, and the Cain-to-Whitehouse-High track as absolutely the best. What negative reviews there were were always about how the teachers were a bit too classical or a bit too conservative--good problems to have in our book! For example, Cain's perhaps the only school around where the kids learn cursive! We purchased less than a mile from Cain and haven't had any problems at all. Our kids test off the charts, and their education is miles ahead of our previous school five miles away, where they literally watched almost every movie that came out. Close Quote
