Summary

Rodolfo C Centeno Elementary is a PK-5 school in Laredo, TX, serving 824 students within the United Independent School District (Isd), where about 87-89% of students come from low-income households. The school has consistently earned a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger over the past decade, with a notable peak of 4-star ratings in the 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 school years, and its overall state ranking has climbed to the 68th percentile in the most recent data.

Centeno’s standout strength is its exceptional performance with students from low socio-economic backgrounds, ranking in the 81st percentile statewide for this subgroup—its highest rating. The school also excels in 5th-grade math, with proficiency rates exceeding both the district and state averages for three consecutive years, reaching 57.02% in the most recent year. Additionally, Centeno has shown a remarkable recovery from a pandemic-era dip, bouncing back from the 22nd percentile in 2020-2021 to the 68th percentile, a stronger rebound than nearby schools like Veterans Memorial Elementary, Prada Elementary, and Salinas Elementary, which have seen stagnation or decline. The school also shines with English Language Learners, ranking in the 70th percentile for this subgroup, and offers the STAAR test in Spanish, where 4th graders scored significantly higher in math than the district and state averages.

However, Centeno faces challenges, particularly a "4th-grade slump" where reading and math proficiency lag behind district averages, though recent data shows improvement. Science scores are inconsistent, dropping from a peak of 45% proficiency in 2022-2023 to around 34.5% in subsequent years. When compared to top-tier schools in the neighboring Laredo Independent School District (Isd), such as J Kawas Elementary and H B Zachry Elementary, which consistently rank in the 77th-90th percentile, Centeno’s overall performance is more modest, but its targeted strengths in math and support for economically disadvantaged students make it a solid choice within UISD.

Open Quote I'm very fortunate my two children have two very excellent teachers. The school itself is severly lacking organization
especially when it comes to being on time for children to enter the premisis for class as well as their monthly "student of the month" ordeal. They fail to identify adults picking students up at the registrars station so basically we waste our time filling forms giving permission who and who can pick up our children. Any stranger can pick up your child. The principal as well as the two assistants severly lack communication skills with parents as we rarely know whats going on. There is no parental involvement whatsoever and so there is no bonding with our children in matters of the school, school projects, school clubs and etcetera. This school seriously needs to rethink it's involment with the parental community. Close Quote
