Summary

Decker Prairie Elementary in Magnolia, TX, is a PK-4 school serving 643 students as part of the highly-ranked Tomball Independent School District (Isd), and it has earned a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger for four consecutive years, with an overall state ranking climbing from the 66th to the 84th percentile.

This school shines in specific areas, particularly for its Gifted and Talented students, who ranked in the 96th percentile statewide in the most recent data, and for its African American students, who achieved an exceptional 98th percentile ranking. However, a key challenge is a noticeable "4th-grade slump": while 3rd-grade reading scores (74.42%) exceed the district average, 4th-grade reading scores drop to 63.52%, well below the district average of 78.78%. This pattern is not seen at nearby Creekview Elementary, a 5-star school with much higher scores, or at Grand Oaks Elementary, which has a similar student population but avoids this decline. Additionally, the school struggles to support its English Language Learner students, who ranked in the 8th percentile, indicating a need for more targeted instructional strategies.

Despite these hurdles, Decker Prairie shows a promising upward trend in overall performance and a decreasing percentage of students qualifying for free or reduced lunch (now 35%). For context, Cedric C Smith in the Magnolia Independent School District (Isd) serves a higher-poverty population (57.1%) yet achieves a 5-star rating, demonstrating that high performance is possible regardless of socioeconomic factors. Decker Prairie has a strong foundation, but its future growth depends on solving the 4th-grade slump and better supporting all student groups to reach the next level of achievement.

Open Quote Decker Prairie is a great school with wonderful leadership and hardworking teachers. There is something very special about this community and it is reminiscent of the great schools I attended as a child. Although there is appropriate preparation for standardized tests, these educators understand education is more than a score on a test. They encourage creativity, problem solving, and a lifelong love of learning. We have been very happy with DPES and could not see our children attending any other school. Close Quote

Open Quote Decker Prairie Elementary is NOT a good school. There is a big problem with bullies and some of the teachers are lazy! My child's papers were misgraded and the teacher was very careless and unorganized. This is the only school I know that scolds children and charges the full 2.00 lunch price for a cheese sandwich if your child forgets lunch money. The whole atmosphere of this school is depressing!! Many teachers and staff members are more concerned with themselves than helping your child or even trying to make learning exciting or fun. Stay away from this drone zone!! Close Quote
