Summary

Buffalo Creek Elementary is a public elementary school in Houston, Texas, serving 412 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Spring Branch Independent School District, which is ranked 335 out of 961 school districts in the state.

Despite the school's relatively high per-student spending of $13,009 and low student-teacher ratio of 13.7, Buffalo Creek Elementary has consistently ranked in the bottom half of Texas elementary schools, with low performance on STAAR tests across all grade levels and subjects. For example, in 2024-2025, only 18.97% of 3rd graders were proficient or better in STAAR Reading, compared to 55.18% for the district and 52.02% for the state. The school's performance is particularly low in STAAR Science, with only 14.62% of 5th graders proficient or better in 2024-2025, compared to 37.28% for the district and 29.57% for the state.

The nearby Terrace Elementary school, which is just 1.55 miles away, has significantly higher STAAR Reading and Mathematics proficiency rates compared to Buffalo Creek Elementary. However, many of the nearby schools also have high percentages of economically disadvantaged students, suggesting that the challenges faced by Buffalo Creek Elementary may be common in the surrounding area. The school could benefit from targeted interventions and support programs to address the specific needs of its student population, particularly in the areas of reading, mathematics, and science.

Open Quote Love the teachers and staff at BCE. We transferred in the Spring 2012 Semester after leaving a highly-regarded private school in the neighborhood. The attention and help we received from BCE surpassed that we received at the private school in leaps and bounds. All the teachers are committed to each and every child and to helping them reach their potential, working with them at the level that the individual needs. The admin staff were so supportive and helpful in getting us quickly transitioned, answering our questions and concerns. The principal and assistant principal are wonderful and have been very responsive to our needs, questions and concerns. Anyone considering BCE for their child should be confident that every effort will be expended to help that child thrive. Close Quote
