Summary

Southwest High School is a public high school in San Antonio, Texas, serving 2,200 students in grades 9-12. The school is part of the Southwest Independent School District (ISD), which is ranked 663 out of 961 districts in the state and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger. Southwest High School has consistently been ranked in the bottom half of Texas high schools, scoring between 949 and 1286 out of around 1,800-1,900 high schools over the past 10 years, with a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Academically, Southwest High School's performance, as measured by STAAR EOC (End of Course) exam proficiency rates, is generally below the state and district averages across all subject areas, including Algebra I, Biology, English I/II, and U.S. History. For example, in the 2024-2025 school year, the school's Algebra I proficiency rate was 17.99%, compared to the district's 25.24% and the state's 47.01%. However, the school performs better in subjects like English II Reading and U.S. History, where its proficiency rates are closer to the district and state averages. Despite these academic challenges, the school has maintained a relatively high 4-year graduation rate, ranging from 93.2% to 96.0% over the past few years, which is comparable to or slightly higher than the district and state averages.

Nearby schools, such as Cast STEM High School and schools in the Somerset ISD, generally outperform Southwest High School across most academic metrics, with significantly higher proficiency rates in subjects like Algebra I, Biology, and English I/II. This suggests that there may be opportunities for Southwest High School to learn from and collaborate with these successful schools to improve its own practices and outcomes.

Open Quote I was a former student of this school from 2001-2005 it was a good atmosphere with alot of pride. Teachers were great always showed respect and helped out everyone I always felt safe at this school as well. This school could always be one of the best in San Antonio if TX schools had focus on class all year than a test at the end of one. This school is deserves more credit than what most people give it.
