Summary

Julian C Gallardo Elementary is a public school in San Antonio, TX, serving 602 students in grades 1-5 as part of the Southside Independent School District (Isd), where 87% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch. This school has undergone a remarkable transformation, climbing from the bottom 9th percentile in Texas elementary rankings in 2021 to the 57th percentile in 2025-2026, earning a 3-star rating—one of the most dramatic turnarounds in the area.

Gallardo’s standout strength is its exceptional support for students with special needs and those from low-income backgrounds. In 2024-2025, its Special Education students ranked in the 91st percentile (5 stars), far outperforming nearby schools like Vestal Elementary and Bellaire Elementary in the Harlandale Independent School District (Isd), which struggle in the bottom 10-15% overall. Similarly, Gallardo’s low-SES students ranked in the 74th percentile (4 stars), proving the school is a powerful engine of equity. In 3rd grade, Gallardo’s students outperformed both the district and state in reading (58% proficient vs. 40% district and 51% state) and math (54% vs. 41% district and 44% state). Its bilingual program also shines, with Spanish-language STAAR scores consistently above state averages—for example, 50% of 4th graders passed reading in Spanish versus 37% statewide. This contrasts sharply with Compass Rose Legacy Elementary (in the Compass Rose Public Schools district), just 3.88 miles away, where only 38% of 3rd graders were proficient in reading and 22% in math.

However, Gallardo faces a clear challenge: a "5th grade slump." In 2025-2026, 5th graders scored below state averages in reading (49% vs. 58%) and math (41% vs. 47%), a pattern seen across multiple years. Additionally, Gifted and Talented students ranked in the 16th percentile (1 star), suggesting the school’s successful interventions focus heavily on remediation, potentially at the expense of enrichment for high-achievers. Nearby H W Schulze Elementary (also in Harlandale ISD) is a rising peer, jumping from the 28th to 52nd percentile, showing strong 3rd-grade reading (59%). Gallardo’s next step is to replicate its early-grade success in upper grades and challenge all students equally.

Open Quote The first time I met with someone about enrolling my kids in this school, they were very rude and careless from the start. I had recently moved to San Antonio and i didn't have a TX License yet and i was harassed and Questioned about Not having one yet to enroll my kids. that should of been my first sign not to enroll my kids in this school. But unfortunately I had no choice for personal reasons.
I have never met anyone so uncaring and rude.
And it dosen't end there i am still having other issues with them for the same reasons and other things that i have witnessed and have no idea why this school is still open.
If you care about your kids please do not take your kids here. Close Quote
