Summary

Travis Elementary is a K-5 school in the San Marcos Consolidated Independent School District serving 440 students in a high-poverty area, where nearly 90% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch.

Travis Elementary has historically been one of the lowest-performing schools in its area, ranking in the 23rd percentile statewide in the 2025-2026 school year. This is significantly lower than nearby same-district schools like Crockett Elementary (82nd percentile) and Hernandez Elementary (83rd percentile), and even below the lowest-ranked school in the neighboring Hays Consolidated Independent School District, Hemphill Elementary (26th percentile). The most critical weakness is in Mathematics: only 19.05% of 3rd graders were proficient in Math, compared to the district average of 38.85% and the state average of 44.33%. However, there is a bright spot in 5th-grade Math, where 43.75% of students were proficient—actually above the district average of 40.65%. The school also shows a positive trend, moving from the 11th percentile in 2022-2023 to the 23rd percentile in 2025-2026.

Interestingly, Rodriguez Elementary, also in San Marcos CISD with similar enrollment and a slightly lower poverty rate, has shown much stronger recent performance, jumping to the 58th percentile in 2024-2025. This suggests that high poverty is not an insurmountable barrier to improvement, and strategies at Rodriguez could serve as a model for Travis. Additionally, Science is a district-wide challenge: Travis's 5th-grade Science scores (23.46% proficient) are very low, but the district average is only 23.04%, well below the state average of 29.57%. While Travis has a high poverty rate, its per-student spending ($11,914) is lower than that of Rodriguez ($13,917) and Hemphill ($11,821), both of which have lower poverty rates, indicating the school may not receive proportionally higher funding despite greater need.
