Summary

Windcrest Elementary is a mid-sized PK-5 school in San Antonio, TX, serving 473 students within the North East Independent School District (Isd), where over 76% of students come from low-income households. The school has faced significant academic challenges, particularly in mathematics, with only 8.77% of 3rd graders and 19.35% of 4th graders achieving proficiency in the most recent school year—rates that are roughly one-fifth to one-third of the district average. This math deficit is the most glaring differentiator from nearby schools; for example, Camelot Elementary achieved 45.07% proficiency in 4th grade math during the same period, while Walzem Elementary also outperformed Windcrest in upper-grade math.

Despite these struggles, Windcrest has shown notable strengths in targeted programs. In the 2022-2023 school year, the school ranked in the 74th percentile for Gifted and Talented students, earning a 4-star rating, and in the 2020-2021 school year, it ranked in the 89th percentile for English Language Learners. This suggests that while the general education program struggles, specialized support for high-need or high-ability groups has been effective. However, the school has seen a sharp decline in its effectiveness for White students, dropping from the 9th percentile in 2023-2024 to the 2nd percentile in the most recent data, making it the lowest-performing subgroup at the school.

Windcrest is part of a cluster of underperforming schools in the area, including Clear Spring Elementary, Serna Elementary, and Idea Walzem Academy, all serving high-poverty communities. In contrast, Sst Alamo, a School of Science and Technology just 1.7 miles away, serves a more economically diverse population and consistently ranks in the top 30% of Texas schools, with proficiency rates often double or triple those of Windcrest. Notably, Windcrest spends $10,107 per student—more than Royal Ridge Elementary ($9,749) and SST Alamo ($9,117)—yet achieves lower outcomes, suggesting that resource allocation, rather than funding alone, is a key challenge. The school’s student-teacher ratio of 14.3 is also higher than many struggling peers, such as Serna (9.3) and Clear Spring (10.9), which may contribute to its difficulties.

Open Quote My son was let go with someone who wasn't suppose to pick him even after I called the school and told him he was suppose to get on the school bus. This has happened more then once. Their excuse was I didn't turn in any legal paper work. Did they ask for legal paper work on the other side, NO! If they had they would've known he wasn't suppose to be picked up by anyone except me! How is this safe for any child? Close Quote

Open Quote I went to this school for the entirety of my childhood until I went to middle school. Can't say that I enjoyed it. I remember one time where they had an author of a children's book come in to speak for us. He ended up calling me out out of the entire school in the auditorium just because I wasn't looking directly at him. He kept telling me to look at him and pay attention even though I had ADHD and I really couldn't because my mind wanted to keep wandering. He called me out 3 times and by the third time I finally realized he was talking to me and he sayd "hey you...yeah YOU. If you don't pay attention and look up here I'm going to DRAG you out of the auditorium."

No one did anything or said anything. It definitely put some fear into me and I can honestly say it was one of the worst experiences of my childhood. Too bad we didn't have smart phones in that day because I would have recorded that so my parents could have sued the school.

The only good thing about the school was that they had Alamo City Heat (a police officer rock cover band) come to play music, which probably helped get me into music. Close Quote
