Summary

Larkspur Elementary in San Antonio, TX, is a PK-5 public school in the North East Independent School District (Isd) serving 849 students, with about 88% of students qualifying for free or reduced lunch, and it has consistently ranked in the bottom 10% of Texas elementary schools over the past decade.

Larkspur’s academic performance is significantly lower than nearby schools. For example, 3rd-grade math proficiency is just 14.52%, compared to 62.5% at Castle Hills Elementary (88th percentile statewide), and 5th-grade science proficiency is a critical 7.87%, the lowest among nearby schools. Even within the same district, Harmony Hills Elementary (60th percentile) performs much better despite also serving a high-poverty population. The school’s student-teacher ratio of 14.1 is the highest in its NEISD comparison group, while higher-performing peers like Oak Meadow Elementary have a ratio of 10:1. This combination of larger class sizes and average per-student spending ($10,615) may contribute to the challenges.

Despite these struggles, there are some bright spots. Larkspur’s African American students ranked in the 47th percentile statewide, the highest-performing subgroup at the school. Additionally, performance on STAAR Spanish tests is often closer to district averages, suggesting the bilingual program is a relative strength. However, the school’s overall ranking in the 4th percentile statewide (rank 4,460 out of 4,627) underscores a critical need for targeted intervention, especially in math and science, to improve outcomes for the majority of its students.

Open Quote My child attended Larkspur her 2nd and 3rd grade year. We have never had any issues and the teachers are great! The 4th and 5th graders are also given the opportunity to become safety patrol members. This allowed my child to look forward to starting her 4th grade year. Close Quote
