Summary

New Summerfield School is a small, rural public school in the New Summerfield Independent School District (Isd) serving 526 students from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade in East Texas. Despite serving a high-poverty population where over 81% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch, the school has achieved a perfect 100% graduation rate for four consecutive years. With a favorable student-to-teacher ratio of about 11:1, the school provides a more personalized learning environment than many larger schools in the region.

New Summerfield shows notable academic strengths in several areas. The school consistently excels in U.S. History, with 86.49% of students proficient in the most recent testing year—far above the state average of 70.17% and significantly higher than nearby Laneville School (37.5%) and Carlisle School (77.55%). Seventh-grade reading is another standout, with 73.68% of students proficient compared to the state average of 54.04%. The school also performs exceptionally well in 4th-grade math (72.41% proficient vs. 49.28% statewide) and 6th-grade math (58.97% vs. 38.57% statewide). Interestingly, New Summerfield often matches or exceeds the performance of Carlisle School, which has a much lower poverty rate, suggesting the school's small size and focused approach are highly effective.

However, the school has areas needing improvement. Math scores show a "peaks and valleys" pattern, with 3rd, 5th, and 7th grades scoring well below state averages—for example, only 25% of 5th graders were proficient in math compared to 47.38% statewide. Middle school science and social studies also lag, with just 12.24% of 8th graders proficient in social studies versus 31.69% statewide. While New Summerfield is much larger than Laneville School (526 vs. 139 students), it consistently outperforms Laneville in nearly every academic metric.
