Summary

Walnut Springs Elementary in New Braunfels, TX, is a K-5 school serving 307 students as part of the New Braunfels Independent School District (Isd), and it has earned a 4-star rating for the 2025-2026 school year, ranking in the 81st percentile among all Texas elementary schools. This school stands out for its exceptional performance in mathematics, consistently outperforming both district and state averages across all tested grades. For example, in 5th-grade math, 67.86% of students were proficient, compared to just 40.17% at nearby Voss Farms Elementary and 33.7% at Klein Road Elementary. This math strength is a key differentiator, as many surrounding schools struggle in this area, while Walnut Springs excels across all grade levels.

Another notable feature is the school's low student-to-teacher ratio of 11.8:1, which creates a more intimate learning environment compared to larger schools like Morningside Elementary (14.9:1) or Voss Farms Elementary (15.8:1). This smaller class size likely supports the school's ability to provide targeted instruction, particularly in math. Additionally, Walnut Springs has shown strong improvement in science, with 5th-grade proficiency rates rising to 40.98% in 2024-2025, significantly outpacing the district average of 30.8% and the state average of 29.57%. This turnaround highlights the school's focus on strengthening areas that were previously weaker.

While the school has a strong overall trajectory, it has experienced some volatility in specific subgroups. For instance, the Gifted and Talented program saw a dramatic swing from a 98th percentile ranking in 2024-2025 to a 43rd percentile in 2025-2026, suggesting that experiences for small cohorts can vary year to year. Despite this, Walnut Springs remains a standout choice for families seeking a school with a strong math program, low class sizes, and a commitment to continuous improvement. Its recent upward trend from a 65th percentile ranking in 2022-2023 to its current 81st percentile shows a school on the rise, making it a compelling option in the New Braunfels area.

Open Quote My son has been going to this school for 4 years. During that time there has been 3 principles. This school lacks any real leadership. The current principle is not willing to address any of the real issues at this school. Many of the teachers do not respond to emails in a timely manner. The teachers show favoritism and are led by the politics of the school. Very few actually care about the education your child is receiving. Parents are not notified when they discipline children. Bullying is a huge problem at this school. One thing positive I will say about this school is that the front office ladies are exceptional. Always willing to help you and are always super nice!
