Summary

Montgomery J H in Montgomery, TX, serves 1,083 students in grades 6-8 and is part of the highly-rated Montgomery Independent School District (Isd), which ranks in the 87th percentile statewide.

This school presents a fascinating "two-schools" story. On one hand, it achieves phenomenal success in advanced coursework, particularly Algebra I, where its students consistently score near 90% proficiency—nearly double the state average. This is a standout strength compared to nearby schools like Oak Hills J H, which also performs well but doesn't match this sustained excellence. On the other hand, Montgomery J H struggles significantly with its general 7th-grade math curriculum, where only about 11% of students are proficient—roughly half the district average and far below the state average. This suggests the school excels at accelerating its top performers but faces challenges in supporting its average students. The school's overall statewide ranking has also declined from the 91st percentile in 2020-2021 to the 74th percentile currently, while Oak Hills J H has maintained a stronger 89th percentile ranking.

When compared to neighboring districts, Montgomery J H is a clear academic leader. Schools in the Willis Independent School District (Isd), such as Lynn Lucas Middle and Robert P Brabham Middle, have much higher poverty rates and rank in the bottom 35% of the state, with proficiency rates often 20-30 points lower in core subjects. However, within its own district, Oak Hills J H outperforms Montgomery J H in nearly every metric, including reading, math, and social studies. For parents, this means Montgomery J H offers exceptional opportunities for advanced math students but may require extra attention for children who need support in standard math, especially in 7th grade.

Open Quote This is a very big junior high (and there's only 2 grade levels - 7th & 8th, not 3 as indicated on School Digger). Anyway, I cannot stress enough how important it is for your child to be involved in at least one school-affiliated activity in order to feel connected. And this school has a lot to offer: band, theater, choir, all kinds of sports, cheerleading, drill team, student council, chess club, service club, FCA, NJHS, etc. The school administration is top notch as are most of the teachers. The academics are very good with many advanced level classes offered, including Spanish and Algebra I. My only complaint as a parent is the 7th grade Texas History project was too over-the-top. Otherwise, both of my kids had a wonderful 2 years here. Close Quote
