Summary

Meridian Elementary is a small, rural PK-5 school in Meridian, TX, serving 170 students within the Meridian Independent School District (Isd), where about 80% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch.

This school has experienced a dramatic and sustained decline in recent years. After performing in the middle of the pack (3-star rating) from 2016 to 2019, its state ranking has plummeted to the 9th percentile (0 stars) for the 2025-2026 school year. Academic proficiency is critically low, especially in mathematics, where only 11% of 3rd graders, 13% of 4th graders, and 19% of 5th graders are meeting state standards. Reading scores are mixed, with 5th graders (63%) slightly exceeding the state average, but 3rd graders (28%) and 4th graders (33%) falling far behind. The school spends significantly more per student ($14,524) than nearby Clifton Elementary ($10,596), yet achieves far worse results, suggesting that additional funding is not translating into improved outcomes.

Despite a favorable student-teacher ratio of 13.2, which should allow for individualized instruction, the school is struggling to serve all its students effectively. Subgroup performance is universally low, with White students ranking in the 8th percentile, Hispanic students in the 4th percentile, and even Gifted and Talented students ranking in the 0th percentile in 2024-2025. The only bright spot is 5th-grade reading, which showed a significant improvement from 37.5% to 62.5% proficiency year-over-year, possibly due to a particularly effective teacher or instructional strategy. Overall, the combination of high spending, low student-teacher ratios, and extremely low academic performance points to deep, systemic challenges that money alone cannot solve.
