Summary

David & Terri Youngblood Elementary is a large elementary school (PK-5) in Katy, TX, serving 1,186 students as part of the highly-regarded Katy Independent School District (Isd). The school has experienced a significant decline in its overall state ranking over the past three years, dropping from the 60th percentile to the 34th percentile, which is a primary concern for families. This decline is largely driven by a critical weakness in mathematics, where proficiency rates have fallen alarmingly low—for example, only 25.7% of 5th graders were proficient in math in the most recent school year, compared to district averages of 55-61%.

While the school has shown some relative strengths, such as a past ability to support English Language Learners (ranking in the 75th percentile statewide in 2024-2025), its overall academic performance now lags behind nearby Katy ISD schools. For instance, McElwain Elementary, which has a similar rate of economic disadvantage (46.5% free/reduced lunch), achieved 61.9% 5th-grade math proficiency in 2024-2025, far exceeding Youngblood's 37.3% that same year. Even Russell & Cindi Faldyn Elementary, with a higher poverty rate (59.8%), outperforms Youngblood in the most recent rankings (55th vs. 34th percentile). Reading scores at Youngblood hover around 50% proficiency, which is a relative bright spot but still below the Katy ISD average of mid-60s to low-70s.

The school's performance with key student subgroups has also dropped sharply. In 2023-2024, Youngblood was a strong performer for African American students (79th percentile) and low socio-economic status students (71st percentile), but by the most recent year, these rankings fell to the 47th and 38th percentiles, respectively. This loss of ground, combined with the persistent math crisis, makes Youngblood the lowest-performing school in its immediate Katy ISD peer group. The school's ability to reverse its math scores and re-establish its previous success with these groups will be critical for its future trajectory.
