Summary

Alcott Elementary is a public elementary school in Houston, Texas, serving 228 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Houston Independent School District (HISD), which is ranked 505 out of 961 districts in the state.

Alcott Elementary consistently ranks in the bottom quartile of Texas elementary schools, with significantly below-average performance on STAAR tests across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in 2024-2025, only 32% of 3rd graders at Alcott were proficient in reading, compared to 52.02% statewide. The school's performance is particularly low in science, with only 8% of 5th graders proficient in 2024-2025, compared to 29.57% statewide. Despite having a relatively low student-teacher ratio and higher-than-average per-student spending, Alcott's academic outcomes remain significantly behind nearby schools like Garden Villas Elementary, Seguin Elementary, and Hartsfield Elementary, which serve similar student populations.

Interestingly, Alcott Elementary's performance varies across different student subgroups, with Hispanic and English Language Learner (ELL) students tending to outperform their African American and economically disadvantaged peers in certain subject areas and grade levels. This suggests that factors beyond just funding and staffing, such as curriculum, instructional practices, and school leadership, may be contributing to the school's persistent underperformance. Addressing these issues may require targeted interventions and a closer collaboration with the HISD district to identify and implement effective practices that can better support the learning needs of Alcott's students.

Open Quote Poor ratings and 1 teacher that has advanced education in education. She was a tutor last year that was hired on as a teacher for 2019-2020. The only upside is Ms Reyes and Ms Redmond at Alcott. Both need to be promoted to Principal. Close Quote

Open Quote Most of the staff have fun for the hills and it looks like the kids or other parents did too. I'm like were are all the kids and how are they still open. This school is wasting tax dollars some classrooms have only 9-13 kids. Some might think that is good but the teachers I trusted left and all I see are fresh faced babies who don't know the problems coming their way. Alcott has been here for years but it looks like it's time to shut the doors. Close Quote
