Summary

James E Mitchell Elementary is a PK-5 school in Georgetown, TX, serving 682 students within the Georgetown Independent School District (Isd). This school is in the midst of a powerful transformation, having jumped from the 17th percentile statewide in 2024-2025 to the 50th percentile in 2025-2026—its highest ranking in nearly a decade. This remarkable turnaround is driven by standout performance in early-grade math, where 3rd-grade proficiency (53.01%) is the highest in the entire GISD cluster and significantly exceeds both district and state averages. The school has also developed an exceptionally effective program for its Gifted & Talented students, now ranking in the 73rd percentile statewide for this group.

Mitchell’s recent success is particularly notable when compared to nearby schools. For example, Wolf Ranch Elementary (4.08 miles away) is the highest-performing GISD elementary at the 75th percentile, but Mitchell now outperforms Wolf Ranch in 3rd-grade math. Meanwhile, Linda Herrington Elementary in Round Rock Independent School District (Isd) (4.54 miles away) is a top-tier performer at the 96th percentile, but serves a very different demographic profile. Mitchell’s improvement is even more impressive given that it serves a moderately high-needs population, with 42.2% of students qualifying for free or reduced lunch.

Despite these gains, Mitchell faces clear challenges. The school shows a "two-speed" performance by subject: while math is strong, reading proficiency drops below 48% in 4th and 5th grades, pointing to a need for literacy intervention in upper grades. Additionally, 5th-grade science scores are alarmingly low (7.48% proficient in 2024-2025), though this is a district-wide issue affecting every nearby GISD elementary. The school is also working to replicate its success for all student groups, as it currently struggles most with its low socio-economic status and Hispanic populations. If the current trajectory continues, Mitchell is poised to become a model for effective turnaround within the district.

Open Quote This is my sons first year at Mitchell. I have been beyond impressed with this school. My son attends the Dual Language program and learned so much. His teacher Mrs. Egbert is outstanding. She stays in contact with the parents and is quick to respond to any questions that arise. The 2 star rating for this school should not be taken to heart. As with any school, your child gets what you give. If you are an involved parent you will love this school! Close Quote
