Summary

Abbett Elementary in Garland, TX, is a mid-sized school serving 710 students from Pre-Kindergarten through 5th grade, part of the Garland Independent School District (Isd). Over 61% of its students come from low socio-economic backgrounds, yet the school has shown a remarkable upward trajectory, earning a 4-star rating for the 2025-2026 school year and ranking in the 76th percentile statewide—a strong rebound from a dip just two years prior.

What truly sets Abbett apart is its exceptional performance with specific student groups, often outperforming its overall rank. For instance, the school ranks in the 84th percentile for both low-income students and English Language Learners, and in the 83rd percentile for African American students. This "Abbett Effect" means the school is particularly effective at closing achievement gaps, a feat that stands out even when compared to nearby schools in the higher-rated Plano Independent School District (Isd), such as Miller Elementary (59th percentile) and Stinson Elementary (62nd percentile). Additionally, Abbett’s Gifted and Talented program ranked in the elite 98th percentile in 2024-2025, showing it excels at supporting both struggling and high-achieving students.

This success is especially noteworthy given Abbett’s resources: its per-student spending ($8,993) is lower than many neighbors, and its student-teacher ratio (17.5:1) is higher than schools like Big Springs Elementary (11.5:1). Despite this, Abbett now consistently outperforms district and state averages in core subjects like Reading and Math. While its Spanish-language STAAR results show some inconsistency, the overall trend is one of rapid, school-wide improvement, making Abbett a compelling choice for families seeking a school that delivers strong results for all students.

Open Quote I feel that there are some excellent teachers at Abbett. However, they have no backup in the classroom from administration and therefore there are a plethora of behavioral problems that are swept under the rug in addition to bullying! Bullying in elementary school should not even be an issue should it??? It feels real warm and fuzzy on the outside. Then, when you become a part of the school, you realize that warm and fuzzy feeling was just lines of bull. Not from most teachers though. The teachers deserve a raise!!! Close Quote

Open Quote The teachers at Abbett Elementary are great. However, the administration this year is just awful. We have had instances where kids were violent in class rooms, throwing objects, kicking walls, pushing other kids head into walls repeatedly etc. and the student was not punished whatsoever. Being sent to the principal's office WAS the punishment. We had another instance that a child touched another child's private parts, but it was over looked because "they were singing and their arms may have been flying around causing this child to touch another's butt and vagina". Nothing happened. When I talked to the principal, she said she would look over first time offenses of inappropriate touch until a child is 9 years old, UNLESS a child is sitting in a chair in class, another child gets up in the middle of class and goes over and touches another student's private parts. SCARE! Bottom line, the administration at Abbett does nothing in order to keep offenses to be reported to the state.

Abbett has a "School Wide Management" plan, which is separate from GISD's code of conduct, that allows students to commit "Level 3 Offenses" such as, fighting, racial slurs, sexual assault, etc. up to 7 times before being suspended. And the absolute best part of this management plan is that it is RESET every six weeks. So all students start with a clean slate to repeat offenses 7 times within a six weeks before being suspended.

If I were you, I would consider sending your child anywhere but here unless new administration is brought in. The current administration does not send out the "School Wide Management" plan at the beginning of the year, so you only find out about it once something has happened and you ask them to provide it to you.
