Summary

Crenshaw Elementary And Middle is a public school located in Port Bolivar, Texas, serving grades PK-8 with a total enrollment of 133 students. The school is part of the Galveston Independent School District, which is ranked 552 out of 961 districts in Texas and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Crenshaw Elementary And Middle has had a fluctuating statewide ranking over the years, ranging from 819 out of 4,320 Texas elementary schools in 2014-2015 (4-star rating) to 3,018 out of 4,651 in the current 2024-2025 school year (2-star rating). The school's performance on standardized tests, such as STAAR, has been consistently below the district and state averages, with some exceptions in certain grade levels and subjects. Compared to nearby schools like Parker Elementary, Morgan Elementary Magnet School, and Ambassadors Preparatory Academy, Crenshaw generally performs worse on academic metrics and has a lower statewide ranking.

Crenshaw Elementary And Middle has a high percentage of students from low socioeconomic backgrounds, with around 75% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch. This high concentration of economically disadvantaged students may contribute to the school's overall academic challenges, as research has shown a strong correlation between socioeconomic status and educational outcomes. The school's student-teacher ratio of 7.9 is relatively low, suggesting that it may have sufficient resources in terms of staffing, but its academic performance continues to be a concern for the Galveston Independent School District.

Open Quote My son attended this school from 4th grade through 8th grade. He graduated High School this year. Hurricane Ike disrupted life on the Bolivar Peninsula, and this school didn't open until February or March of 2008 after the storm. From my understanding, most students didn't even attend any school from September to the time it opened. Somehow, the staff came back...what ones could, and with being understaffed for the grades there, the teachers were able to help the kids pass the state tests and earn a Recognized rating. I am also going to add to this the reason I bring up my son attending school here is because after attending this school, he took the AP Language test his freshman year in high school and earned a 3. He didn't receive that preparation in just one year of high school...that came from years of preparation at this particular campus. I know juniors and seniors that can't earn a 3 on that advanced test-it earns students college credit. In addition, he also scored a 29 on his ACT exam and earned Merit Scholarships. You just can't do that without a solid base, and that he received from this school. My daughter attended this school too from Kindergarten until 4th grade. We had no where to live and she had to change schools (Hurricane Ike). The school she is at now is not nearly as interested in her as an individual as Crenshaw was. I am taking her back. The school is currently short staffed, but as numbers increased the teachers will come back. It is a school that builds not only a child's intelligence, but also his/her faith in himself/herself, and builds believe in student capability and achievement. A great place...I can't say it enough...I hope budget cuts don't mess this tranquil and caring school up. Close Quote
