Summary

North Shore Senior High in Houston, TX, is a large comprehensive high school serving 4,284 students in grades 9-12 within the Galena Park Independent School District (Isd), where about 87% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch. The school has consistently ranked in the 2-star range on SchoolDigger, placing it in the 32nd to 45th percentile among Texas high schools, with a graduation rate hovering around 87-89% in recent years.

Compared to nearby traditional high schools serving similar populations, North Shore stands out as a "middle of the pack" performer. It consistently outperforms its closest large neighbors like C E King High School (33rd percentile), Channelview High School (27th percentile), and Furr High School (32nd percentile) in overall state ranking. However, the most dramatic contrast is with the nearby Galena Park Independent School District (Isd) Career & Technical Echs, a 5-star magnet school ranking in the 96th percentile. While North Shore struggles to meet state averages in subjects like Biology (63% proficient) and U.S. History, the ECHS dramatically exceeds them (97% proficient in Biology), highlighting a two-tier system within the same district.

One notable bright spot is North Shore's performance in Algebra I, where 56.86% of students were proficient—above the state average and higher than all nearby traditional high schools. The school also shows a unique strength in serving its Asian student population, who ranked in the 89th percentile statewide. However, a persistent challenge is the dropout rate of 3.8%, which is 1.5 times higher than the district average and more than double that of C.E. King. The area around North Shore is also a hub for alternative education, with several "Highpoint" schools and other programs nearby, suggesting that at-risk students may be funneled into these settings, which could impact the school's own dropout and graduation statistics.

Open Quote I met some great young people who seemed to have goals set for themselves. I'm very proud to hear that coming from young people. Even speaking with the middle schoolers, they too seem to focused on school. Although many love football, the no pass no play is a great motivation for them to stay on top while in school. The staff seem to stay positive as well. Everyone always seems approachable and acceptance to communicating with their students. Glad to see a school care about its students. Close Quote
