Summary

John T White Elementary is a PK-5 campus in the Fort Worth Independent School District (Isd) serving 369 students in a high-poverty area, where over 95% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch. The school has historically ranked in the bottom 10-15% of Texas elementary schools, but recent data shows a slight upward trend, moving from the 3rd percentile in 2022-2023 to the 8th percentile in 2025-2026.

The most striking feature of John T White is its exceptional performance in Spanish-language STAAR reading assessments, which dramatically outperform both district and state averages. For example, in 2025-2026, 4th grade Spanish reading scored 80% proficient, compared to just 37% statewide. This success suggests the school's bilingual program is a clear strength. However, English-language scores and math proficiency remain very low—5th grade math was only 15.5% proficient in 2025-2026. The school invests heavily in its students, spending $15,191 per pupil and maintaining a low student-teacher ratio of 12.9:1, which is lower than nearby schools like East Handley Elementary (15.2:1) and Eastern Hills Elementary (17.7:1).

Interesting comparisons with nearby schools highlight both challenges and opportunities. Lowery Road, just 0.76 miles away with a similar demographic profile, ranks in the 37th percentile and significantly outperforms John T White in math—4th grade math proficiency was 59.7% versus 24.6%. Meanwhile, Uplift Crescendo Prep Ps, a nearby charter school, has surged to the 58th percentile and outperforms John T White in nearly every subject. On a positive note, recent subgroup data shows promising improvement: students from low socio-economic backgrounds jumped from the 15th to the 41st percentile in 2024-2025, and African American students rose from the 29th to the 49th percentile. These gains suggest that recent interventions may be starting to take effect, even as the school works to translate its strong bilingual program into broader academic success.

Open Quote The administration and teachers do not communicate with parents at all. An example is when my son's bus broke down to pick up the kids from school, they called for a replacement bus to get the kids which arrived an hour later and they never called the parents to let us know what was going on. Teacher ignores issues in the class about bullying and gave conflicting instructions to me and my wife about homework assignments. It feels like we are fighting against the school rather than working with them to help our son succeed academically. Close Quote
