Summary

Fairfield Intermediate in Fairfield, TX, is a public school serving 348 students in grades 3 through 5 within the Fairfield Independent School District (Isd), located in a rural area where about 61% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch.

Fairfield Intermediate has experienced a sharp and recent academic decline, dropping from the 68th percentile statewide in 2020-2021 to a projected 21st percentile for 2025-2026, resulting in a 1-star rating for the last two years. The school now underperforms the state average in every subject and grade level tested, with the largest gaps in 3rd grade Math (24.78% proficient vs. 44.33% statewide) and 4th grade Reading (37.72% vs. 53.04%). This decline affects nearly all student groups, including those from low socio-economic backgrounds and special education students, who have dropped to the 1st percentile. Interestingly, the school’s Gifted and Talented program remains a strong point, having ranked 1st in the state in 2020-2021, though it has since declined to the 67th percentile. The school’s per-student spending has increased to $11,964, and it maintains a favorable student-to-teacher ratio of 12.8:1, suggesting the decline is not due to lack of resources but likely issues with instruction or curriculum.

A telling comparison is with Teague Elementary, just 9.4 miles away, which serves a similar demographic (63.56% free/reduced lunch) but ranks in the 88th percentile (4 stars) and significantly outperforms the state average in every subject—for example, 70.11% proficient in 3rd grade Math versus Fairfield’s 24.78%. This contrast indicates that Fairfield Intermediate’s challenges are likely school-specific rather than inherent to its student population. Nearby schools like Cayuga Elementary (63rd percentile) and Buffalo Elementary also show more stable performance, while R Q Sims Intermediate in Mexia is the only school in the comparison group with a lower ranking (12th percentile).

Open Quote Not a kid friendly school. Students are not allowed to talk in between classes at their lockers, in the mornings, or during the majority of lunch. Recess is 20 min. on paper only, poor scheduling has one class starting at the same time that the last one ended. Students do not want parents to contact teachers with questions because they fear repercussions, being fun of or comments being made about content of the conversation. Lots of tests given, actual tests are never sent home so parents can not go over the test with their kid. They only get to see a scratch paper with the grade at the top. Close Quote
