Summary

Tradition Elementary in Saint Hedwig, TX, is a PK-5 school serving 561 students as part of the East Central Independent School District (Isd), and it stands out as a relative bright spot in a challenging area, showing a clear upward trend from a low point in the 2023-2024 school year.

While the school’s overall performance is below state averages, it has climbed from the 11th percentile to the 28th percentile, a notable improvement compared to nearby schools like Honor Elementary (6th percentile) and Escondido Elementary (19th percentile). A key strength is 5th-grade reading, where students consistently outperform the district and even approach state averages—for example, achieving a 56.58% proficiency rate in 2024-2025, far exceeding Converse Elementary (28.92%) and James L Masters (35.45%). However, math scores lag significantly behind reading, with 3rd-grade math at 33.06% versus the state average of 44.33%, and science is a critical weakness, with only 15.79% of 5th graders proficient compared to the state’s 29.57%.

For context, the nearby La Vernia Intermediate (in the higher-performing La Vernia Independent School District (Isd)) consistently scores 15-25 percentage points higher in every subject, highlighting the challenges Tradition faces. Despite this, the school’s student-teacher ratio of 16.5:1 is slightly better than many peers, and its Hispanic students have shown strong improvement, ranking in the 49th percentile in 2025-2026. If you’re considering this school, know that it offers a stable, improving environment with a particularly effective 5th-grade team, but you may want to supplement math and science instruction at home.

Open Quote One of the teacher's aides was too rough with my special needs son leaving him with bruises on his arm. I no longer felt safe sending him here. After the CPS case closed some of the staff became very cold and petty towards me and they sent my son away to another school. Close Quote
