Summary

P H Greene Elementary in Webster, TX, serves 545 students from Pre-K through 5th grade as part of the highly-rated Clear Creek Independent School District (Isd), but has experienced a significant decline in its state ranking over the past decade, now earning a 2-star rating.

The school's most pressing challenge is a persistent weakness in mathematics, with proficiency rates in 3rd and 5th grade math falling well below both district and state averages. For example, only 34.78% of 3rd graders were proficient in math, compared to 55.62% district-wide. This math deficit is not shared by nearby schools like C D Landolt Elementary (0.7 miles away), which achieved 68.57% proficiency in 3rd grade math, or Walter Hall Elementary (2.97 miles away) with 70.51%. The school also struggles with specific student groups, including a sharp drop in performance for its Gifted and Talented population, which fell from the 70th percentile to the 38th percentile in recent years.

Despite these challenges, there are bright spots. The school has a notably effective program for English Language Learners, ranking in the 80th percentile for this subgroup. Additionally, 5th-grade reading has been a consistent strength, often exceeding state averages and even surpassing the district average in some years. Interestingly, P H Greene spends more per student ($10,478) than higher-performing neighbors like C W Cline Elementary ($8,793) in the nearby Friendswood Independent School District (Isd), suggesting that funding alone is not the issue. The school is at a crossroads, needing targeted interventions in math and support for specific student groups to reverse its downward trend.

Open Quote I pulled my daughter out of Greene do to the children and staff. Her 2nd grade teacher had a baby and was gone the entire year minus a few weeks. Third grade was no better. The teachers were constantly going to meetings during classroom hours. The work giving was a joke with errors and below level work. They are more concerned with them being able to answer ABCD then having a well rounded education. The first two years were great but with the shake up in the administration and teachers it is quickly going down hill. Close Quote

Open Quote We just started our first day of school there after being transferred involuntarily due to population issues. It was not very welcoming. We didn't get to attend an orientation of any sort because the district made the decision for us to move schools, and I wanted to get information on the class, school and teacher, and was treated as just an overbearing parent that wouldn't leave. They were also very adamant about me not walking my 4 year old to his Pre-Kindergarten class. I have a student attending Landolt and we were just transferred from Wedgewood, neither of which had a problem with this, especially for the younger students. I still went to the class but I was very put off by the whole morning and am not very excited at all for the prospects of this year. Close Quote
