Summary

Chico Elementary is a small, rural PK-5 school in the Chico Independent School District (Isd), serving 284 students in Chico, TX, with over half qualifying for free or reduced lunch. The school has historically been a solid mid-tier performer, but recent data shows a significant decline, dropping from the 57th percentile statewide to the 25th percentile, resulting in a 1-star rating. This is a stark contrast to nearby high-performing schools like Young Elementary (72nd percentile) and Alvord Elementary (64th percentile), which have maintained their rankings. Even Bowie Intermediate (39th percentile) now ranks higher than Chico.

The school shows a clear and widening gap between Reading and Math proficiency. While 5th-grade Reading is a relative strength (55.93% proficient, close to the state average), 5th-grade Math has plummeted to just 27.12% proficient, far below the state average of 47.38%. This 28.8 percentage point gap is the largest among all nearby schools. For comparison, Alvord Elementary has a much smaller gap (54.41% Reading vs. 33.82% Math), and Young Elementary shows strength in both subjects. Despite a favorable student-teacher ratio of 13.5:1—lower than Carson Elementary (15.6:1) and Bridgeport Elementary (16.2:1)—the school is struggling significantly with its Special Education students, who ranked in the 6th percentile statewide.

Interestingly, Chico has been a strong performer for low socio-economic status students, ranking in the 71st and 78th percentiles in recent years, suggesting effective support for its economically disadvantaged population. However, the school's Gifted and Talented program shows extreme volatility, dropping from the 99th percentile to the 3rd percentile, which demands immediate investigation. While Chico still outperforms the struggling Bridgeport Intermediate (4th percentile) in most subjects, the broad decline in performance, severe math weakness, and failure to support key subgroups indicate a system under stress that needs urgent attention.
