Summary

Alkek Elementary is a public elementary school in Bandera, Texas, serving 616 students in grades PK-5 as part of the Bandera Independent School District (ISD). While the school's academic performance, as measured by STAAR test scores, is generally below the state average, it outperforms the nearby Center Point Elementary in the Center Point ISD.

Alkek Elementary's proficiency rates in reading and math are lower than the Bandera ISD and Texas state averages, with the largest gaps in 4th grade reading and 3rd grade math. However, the school performs better than the district average in 5th grade science. Additionally, Alkek Elementary has a higher percentage of economically disadvantaged students and English Language Learners, which may contribute to the lower academic performance compared to the state.

Despite these challenges, Alkek Elementary's Gifted and Talented program has shown promising results, with the school ranking 740 out of 3,006 Texas elementary schools in 2020-2021 and earning a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger. This suggests opportunities for growth and targeted interventions to better support student success at the school.

Open Quote The administration has a 'better than you' attitude. The staff leave no doubt that THEY are the experts, you are the mere parent, drop your child off at the door if you must (riding the bus is preferred)and leave the rest to them; after all they know best how to educate your child. Dare to disagree with them on any matter, be it an academic subject, school bullying, or disipline issue, and you will instantly find yourself belittled, your concerns minimized, and even rejected as unfounded. The only reason I don't give Alkek 1 star, is because as far as I know there have been no reports of drugs, alcohol, or serious threats at this school. So, there are worse schools in America, I'm just not sure there are worse schools in RURAL America. Close Quote
