Summary

Boone Elementary is a mid-sized elementary school (PK-5) in the 78749 zip code of Austin, TX, serving 428 students as part of the Austin Independent School District (Isd).

Boone finds itself in a unique position as a "middle ground" school within a neighborhood of stark contrasts. It is geographically surrounded by some of the highest-performing elementary schools in Texas, such as Mills Elementary (99th percentile) and Kiker Elementary (95th percentile), yet its own state ranking has recently settled in the 56th percentile. While this is notably higher than nearby schools like Kocurek Elementary (40th percentile), it creates a significant gap between Boone and its top-tier neighbors. The school maintains a favorable student-teacher ratio of 13.3:1, which is lower than many of its high-performing peers and suggests a potential for more individualized attention. However, this resource advantage makes the school's recent academic declines particularly puzzling.

The most critical issue facing Boone is a severe and recent decline in mathematics proficiency. In the 2022-2023 school year, 3rd-grade math proficiency was an impressive 63%, but by the 2025-2026 school year, it had plummeted to just 29.31%—a drop of over 33 percentage points. This stands in stark contrast to schools like Sunset Valley Elementary and Mills, where math scores remain consistently high. While reading scores have remained a relative strength—with 5th-grade reading proficiency at 65.38% in 2025-2026, outperforming both the district and state—science scores have also been a persistent concern, hovering around 30% proficiency. Boone has the resources and community support to be a high-performing school, but its ability to diagnose and reverse this math decline will be the defining factor in its future trajectory.

Open Quote An excellent neighborhood school with a focus on environmental stewardship & science.
The principle is an excellent leader with both old school values & cutting edge ideas. He has obtained numerous grants making our school the only in the United States that is both 100 solar & has a well appointed makerspace.
The PTA is highly active & funds a number of value added activities. The kids are super diverse & over half the school is on the free lunch program. Everyone including parents & teachers & super cool in the old keep Austin weird way. Close Quote
