Summary

Summitt Elementary is a high-performing public school in the Austin Independent School District (Isd), serving 764 students in grades PK-5 in a relatively affluent area of Austin, TX, where only about 26% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch.

Summitt Elementary consistently ranks among the top 10% of elementary schools in Texas, earning a 5-star rating from SchoolDigger for three consecutive years. The school significantly outperforms both the district and state averages in every subject and grade level. For example, 4th-grade Reading proficiency reached nearly 83% in the 2025-2026 school year, compared to about 61% for the district and 53% statewide. The school is particularly effective for its White students, who rank in the 97th percentile statewide, and also provides strong support for Special Education and Gifted & Talented students, both earning 4-star ratings. Summitt achieves these results with a student-teacher ratio of 13.6 and mid-range per-student spending, suggesting efficient use of resources and a strong school culture.

When compared to nearby schools, Summitt is a clear leader. It dramatically outperforms Davis Elementary (1.33 miles away), which ranks in the 70th percentile, and far surpasses Parmer Lane Elementary (1.66 miles away), which serves a higher-poverty population and ranks in the 43rd percentile. However, the school faces a significant challenge: while it excels for many students, performance for African American and Hispanic students has declined in recent years, creating a notable achievement gap. The school also competes well against Basis Austin, a nearby charter school that outperforms Summitt in some subjects but serves a much smaller student body. Overall, Summitt offers a proven, traditional public school environment with a strong track record, but families should be aware of the disparities in outcomes for different student groups.

Open Quote Summitt is an excellent school! The Vietnamese Dual Language program is top notch. Students at Summitt are exposed to many cultures and celebrate many school traditions. The school has an exchange program with a school in Germany, and Summitt just started a biannual trip to Vietnam for the students as well. Summitt includes a wonderful community of parents, volunteers and teachers. The school keeps a very busy calendar of activities for the students to participate in, and our kids love it!
