Summary

Hilltop Elementary in Argyle, TX, serves 788 students in grades PK-5 and is part of the highly-rated Argyle Independent School District (Isd), which ranks in the 98th percentile statewide. While Hilltop is a strong school overall, ranking in the 86th percentile, it is the lowest-ranked elementary school in its district, with peers like Argyle South Elementary (95th percentile), Argyle West (97th percentile), and Jane Ruestmann Elementary (94th percentile) all outperforming it. This creates a unique situation where the "weakest" school in the district is still better than the vast majority of schools in Texas.

A key area of concern is a notable decline in 5th-grade reading proficiency, which dropped from 77.27% in 2024-2025 to 63.78% in 2025-2026—a 13.5 percentage point drop that is the only grade level where Hilltop falls below the district average. Additionally, 3rd-grade math has been a persistent struggle, with proficiency rates consistently underperforming the district average, such as 42.45% in 2023-2024 compared to the district's 61.27%. The student-to-teacher ratio has also increased to 17.2, the highest among its district peers, which may be a contributing factor to these performance dips.

Interestingly, Hilltop excels in supporting English Language Learner (ELL) students, ranking in the 88th percentile in 2025-2026—a massive improvement from the 41st percentile two years prior. When compared to nearby schools in the Denton Independent School District (Isd), Blanton Elementary stands out as a fascinating outlier, ranking in the 94th percentile despite being in a lower-ranked district, while schools like McNair Elementary and Ryan Elementary have significantly lower test scores. This comparison highlights that Hilltop, while strong, is not maximizing its affluent community's advantage as effectively as some of its neighbors.

Open Quote Hilltop Elementary is an excellent school where children thrive in a safe, academic environment. Whole child instruction is the focus of each classroom. Parent participation is high and community involvement is paramount. My children excelled at Hilltop Elementary and were well prepared for Middle School. We had a wonderful experience and I would definitely recommend this extraordinary elementary school for each and every child. The teachers, staff and administration truly strive to make a difference. Open Quote The school has some excellent teachers, though instruction in testing years is completely geared to the test. There is not a whole child approach to teaching and learning, and very little character development. Leadership at the school is stagnant. Instruction is not aligned to the TEKS. Given the choice, I would not send my kids to this school, though there are definitely pockets of great instruction. Close Quote
