Summary

Mahanay Elementary is a PK-4 school in Houston, TX, serving 499 students within the Alief Independent School District (Isd), where over 90% of students come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. This school has historically been a solid performer, ranking in the 56th to 68th percentile statewide from 2016 to 2023, but recent data shows a significant decline to the 29th percentile in 2025-2026, making it a school in transition that parents should watch closely.

The most dramatic change at Mahanay is the sharp drop in 4th-grade proficiency. In 2022-2023, 57% of 4th graders were proficient in Reading and 51% in Math—far exceeding district and state averages. By 2025-2026, those numbers plummeted to 29% in Reading and 24% in Math, a decline of nearly 30 percentage points. This is not seen at nearby schools like Alexander Elementary, where 4th graders (50% Reading, 53% Math) actually outperformed 3rd graders. However, Mahanay’s 3rd-grade Math is a bright spot, with 45% proficient in 2025-2026, significantly higher than the district average (28%) and slightly above the state average (44%). This creates a "tale of two schools" within one building, suggesting the challenge is concentrated in the 4th-grade instructional program rather than a school-wide issue.

Mahanay spends over $12,000 per student and maintains a low student-teacher ratio of 10.8:1, yet these resources are not translating into competitive results compared to nearby charter schools. For example, Sst Advancement achieves much higher academic outcomes (79th percentile) with a higher student-teacher ratio (17.7:1) and lower per-pupil spending ($8,195). The school has shown it can be highly effective for specific groups—ranking in the 90th percentile for Special Education students in 2022-2023—but this success is inconsistent, dropping to the 55th percentile for the same group in 2025-2026. This volatility points to potential inefficiencies in how resources are used, making it essential for parents to ask about the school’s plans for improving 4th-grade instruction and ensuring consistent support for all students.

Open Quote I think the teachers are to quick to accuse children and send them to the office. When they go to the office it is all day and they have to repeat the same work over and over again. This school does not participate in field trips. Have 1 family function year. They do not participate in parties but 2 a year. Can not bring cupcakes for a childs birthday. Suggest that your child needs medicine. PTO money goes to teacher bonuses. They do not teach cursive. They spend the whole year studying for the task test and learning the answers before they can read the question. Close Quote
