Summary

Shotwell Middle is a public magnet middle school in Houston, Texas, serving 929 students in grades 6-8. The school is part of the Aldine Independent School District, which is ranked 740 out of 961 districts in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger. Shotwell Middle has consistently ranked in the bottom half of Texas middle schools over the past 10 years, with a 1-star rating for most of that time.

Shotwell Middle's test scores are significantly below the state averages across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in 2024-2025, only 37.45% of 6th graders were proficient or better in STAAR Reading, compared to the state average of 54.21%. In Math, the proficiency rates were even lower, with only 17.76% of 6th graders, 5.24% of 7th graders, and 25.09% of 8th graders meeting the standard. The school also has relatively high dropout rates, ranging from 0.9% to 4.5% in recent years, which are higher than the state and district averages. Additionally, Shotwell Middle has a very high percentage of students (over 90%) who qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a high-poverty student population.

When comparing Shotwell Middle to other nearby middle schools in the Aldine ISD and Spring ISD districts, it becomes clear that Shotwell is one of the lower-performing schools in the area. Schools like Houston Academy, Garcia Middle, and Plummer Middle all outperform Shotwell on state assessments, despite serving similar student populations. However, one bright spot for Shotwell Middle is its performance on the STAAR Algebra I End-of-Course exam, where over 90% of students have been proficient or better in recent years, significantly higher than the district and state averages.

Open Quote I BEEN HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THIS SCHOOL SINCE MY KIDS STARTED IN 2010. ALMOST THE WHOLE STAFF IS UNPROFESSIONAL. THEY PURNISH KIDS FOR EVERY LITTLE THING. THEY ACT LIKE THEY DON'T WANT THE KIDS TO HAVE A GOOD EDUCATION. THE TEACHERS IS RUDED AND CURSE AT THE KIDS. IF YOUR CHILD NEEDS HELP WITH SCHOOL WORK AND ASK THE TEACHERS FOR HELP, THE TEACHERS GET AN ATTITUDE. I NEVER EXPERIENCE THIS BEFORE AND REGRET EVER SENDING MY KIDS THERE. I WAS TOLD THAT I CAN'T TAKE MY KIDS OUT BECAUSE I LIVE IN THE SCHOOL ZONE AND THIS IS THEIR NEW LAW. NOW THEY DO HAVE VERY LITTLE TEACHERS THERE WHO CARE ABOUT THE KIDS EDUCATIONS BUT THEY ALL SCARE TO SAY SOMETHING BECAUSE THEY MIGHT LOSE THEIR JOB. NOW I'M FORCE TO GIVE UP MY HOUSE AND MOVE SOMEWHERE MY KIDS CAN HAVE A GREAT EDUCATION. I HOPE THAT THEY GET A NEW PRINCIPLE AND GET RID OF THE TEACHERS WHO DON'T CARE ABOUT THE KIDS EDUCATION AND JUST THERE FOR A CHECK. PURNISHING KIDS FOR EVERYTHING THAT'S NOT IMPORTANT INSTEAD OF FINDING A SOLULATIONS TO HELP THEM IS NOT RIGHT. Close Quote
