Summary

Ut Tyler University Academy At Tyler is a small, alternative public school located on the University of Texas at Tyler campus, serving 446 students in grades K-12 as a university charter school distinct from the traditional Tyler ISD.

This school stands out for its exceptional high school outcomes, including a 100% graduation rate for three of the last four years and a zero dropout rate for five consecutive years. In high school End-of-Course exams, it significantly outperforms nearby Founders Classical Academy-Tyler and state averages, particularly in U.S. History (95.65% vs. 65.22% and 70.17%), English I Reading (90.91% vs. 71.43% and 55.43%), and Biology (86.36% vs. 66.67% and 70.51%). Middle school reading is also a clear strength, with 8th grade reading reaching 100% proficiency compared to 75.86% at Founders Classical and 56.39% statewide. However, the school faces a persistent challenge in mathematics, especially in middle grades—6th grade math proficiency was just 37.5% and 8th grade math was 39.02%, both below state averages. This creates a "tale of two schools" where the high school functions as a high-performing academic magnet, while elementary and middle school math instruction lags behind.

For parents, this means Ut Tyler University Academy At Tyler is an excellent choice for students entering high school, offering a college-prep culture and strong humanities and science outcomes. However, families with younger children should investigate the math curriculum closely, as the university advantage does not appear to translate to K-8 math performance. The school is part of the Ut Tyler University Academy district, and its unique location on a university campus provides resources that benefit high school students particularly well.

Open Quote WORST school ever! The office receptionist is overly rude and always on her cell phone, the teachers do not work with the parents, and the office staff simply does not care. If you are a working parent, don't bother trying to get involved - they cater their programs and meetings around the teachers and staff. The bullying policy is a joke - they teach your children to become whiny tattletales and then they don't even do anything to alleviate the situation, and your child is the one that gets punished for defending him or herself. So many parents have removed their children from this "charter school" this year (2018-2019)! The teachers do not teach, and when homework is sent home it is not age appropriate. It's a glorified daycare, and the employees don't want to deal with your child. The school is not fair and they discriminate and label children. Save yourself the trouble and heartache, and find a different school for your child! Close Quote

Open Quote Great philosophy- horrible implementation. We had so much hope they would get it figured out, but it was awful. My kids said it was fun, but both complained that they weren't learning anything. Communication is key with this type of model, and the school did not communicate well on the most important topics. My kids got behind, but fortunately we left and got them caught up. MANY other parents pulled their kids in a mass exodus after seeing the school's failure to implement. Such a disappointment!
