Summary

Idea Academy Alamo is a K-5 charter elementary school in Alamo, TX, serving 698 students as part of the Idea Public Schools district, where 98% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch. This school has seen a steady decline in its state ranking over the past decade, currently sitting in the 28th percentile (1 star), its lowest point in recent years. While the school struggles overall, it shows a notable strength in serving its Special Education students, who ranked in the 65th percentile (3 stars) in the most recent year—a dramatic improvement from just two years prior. However, there is a persistent achievement gap between genders, with female students consistently outperforming male students by a significant margin.

Compared to nearby schools, Idea Academy Alamo stands out for its larger class sizes, with a student-to-teacher ratio of 21.8:1, which is higher than all surrounding elementary schools. It also spends less per student ($8,902) than traditional public schools in the Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Independent School District (Isd) and Donna Independent School District (Isd), which spend between $11,002 and $12,733 per student. A stark contrast is Augusto Guerra Elementary, just 0.81 miles away, which serves a similarly high-poverty population but ranks in the 66th percentile (3 stars) and outperforms Idea Academy Alamo in nearly every subject and grade level. This comparison shows that high poverty does not have to limit academic success.

Academically, the school shows inconsistent performance, particularly in math, where 4th-grade proficiency (39%) exceeds the district average, but 3rd-grade proficiency (32%) falls below it. Science scores are low but not unusual for the region, as several nearby schools score even lower. A former bright spot—the "At Risk" subgroup ranking in the 78th percentile in 2021-2022—has no recent data, leaving uncertainty about whether that success has been maintained. For parents, this school offers a focused environment with a recent strength in special education, but families should weigh the larger class sizes and lower spending against the higher performance of nearby options like Augusto Guerra Elementary.

Open Quote Idea Alamo is EXCELLENT! My granddaughter is in kindergarten in Mrs. Maria Perez's class. Even though my granddaughter is only 5 years old, I can see how much she enjoys her classes, her teachers, and most of all how proud she is to let everyone know that she goes to Idea Alamo. We have personally met a lot of students and parents from other Idea Schools when we are shopping or running errands. My granddaughter spots the students with excitement by their uniforms and wants to find out if which Idea School they attend, hoping they attend hers. I have great respect and admiration for the teachers and staff. Everyone is very helpful toward each other as well as anyone else that needs help. I'm amazed on how the students are very well behaved and disciplined. The Principal, Mrs. Anna Garza and Asst. Principal, Mrs. Kathy Arce do everything possible for the betterment of all the students and the school itself. God Bless everyone at Idea Alamo. And yes, I have witness everything because I have been a volunteer at Idea Alamo a few times. I must say "I LOVE THIS SCHOOL!". Close Quote
