Summary

Harmony School Of Innovation - Houston is a public charter middle school in Houston, TX, serving 497 students in grades 6-8 and part of the Harmony Public Schools - Houston South district, which ranks in the 69th percentile statewide. This school stands out for its exceptional academic performance, especially in math, where it dramatically outperforms nearby traditional public schools in both the Alief Independent School District (Isd) and Houston Independent School District (Isd). For example, 6th-grade math proficiency at Harmony is 55.56%, compared to a range of just 15.11% to 37.98% at nearby schools like Youngblood Intermediate and Welch Middle. The school also boasts a near-perfect 98.21% proficiency rate in Algebra I, nearly double the state average of 54.03%.

What makes Harmony particularly impressive is its ability to achieve top-tier results while serving a predominantly low-income population, with 87-90% of students qualifying for free or reduced lunch. The school’s low socio-economic status students rank in the 94th percentile statewide, a powerful indicator that its instructional model effectively closes achievement gaps. In contrast, nearby schools with similar demographics, such as Sugar Grove Academy (98.97% low-income), rank in the bottom 20% of the state. Harmony also maintains a very low dropout rate of 0.0% and a favorable student-teacher ratio of 14.2:1, suggesting a supportive learning environment.

When comparing Harmony to other high-performing charters in the area, it’s clear that each has distinct strengths. While KIPP Academy Middle excels in reading (78.51% proficiency in 8th grade), Harmony is a math and science powerhouse. The school also demonstrates operational efficiency, spending $10,035 per student—slightly less than nearby Alief ISD schools like Mata Intermediate ($11,138)—while achieving far better academic outcomes. However, parents should note a recent decline in performance for White students and some volatility with Gifted and Talented students, which may warrant further inquiry.

Open Quote This school is disorganized and chaotic. They always seem to jumping from one thing to another, and none of the plans seem to be well thought out. The at home, online assignments come with passwords that don't work (on several occasions), the laptops they bought for the students at great cost seem to be of very little educational value. There seems to be such waste at this school. Expensive (& very slippery) marble floors were put in the rundown, old part of the school. A huge, and now very dirty-looking, globe was installed on the top of the administration building. The money that they waste on these, and many other things, could be put towards giving the low paid teachers a much needed raise.
They always seem to be copying what the better rated charter schools (Yes Prep & Kipp) are doing, but they seem to put very little forethought into their actions. Close Quote
