Summary

Yes Prep - Hobby is a public charter school in Houston, TX, serving 685 students in grades 6 through 11, and is part of the Yes Prep Public Schools Inc district, which holds a strong 4-star rating in Texas. The school serves a predominantly low-income community, with over 86% of students qualifying for free or reduced lunch, and maintains a moderate student-teacher ratio of about 16:1.

Yes Prep - Hobby stands out from nearby alternative schools due to its strong academic performance and clear upward trends. For example, in 8th-grade math, proficiency has soared from just 7% in 2022-2023 to an impressive 52.46% in 2025-2026, far exceeding the state average of 47.24% and dramatically outperforming nearby schools like George I Sanchez Charter (26.53%) and Community Services-Sec (single digits). The school also excels in high school end-of-course exams, with Biology proficiency at 77.14% and U.S. History at 80.95%, rivaling the high-performing Dr Kirk Lewis Career And Technical High School. While the middle school years show some mixed results, the high school program is a clear strength, accelerating student learning effectively.

However, a direct comparison with Houston Gateway Academy - Coral Campus, a nearby charter serving a similar demographic, reveals room for growth, as Gateway often scores 10-20 percentage points higher in most subjects. Additionally, Yes Prep - Hobby's per-student spending of $20,857 is notably high—more than double that of Dr. Kirk Lewis—raising questions about cost-effectiveness. The school also shows some year-to-year performance volatility, particularly in English I Reading, which swung from 68% to 35% and back to 62.83% over recent years. Despite these challenges, the school's commitment to improvement and low dropout rates (down to 0.3% in 2022-2023) make it a compelling option for families seeking a stable, academically growing environment.

Open Quote An extremely toxic environment ever since the new principal got hired. I just started working here and the worst school by far in my experience. So many teachers are leaving for the same reason. Feels like a prison camp and that is not how a school should feel for anyone. This school goes against my beliefs as an educator. Close Quote

Open Quote I do not recommend this school because there is a substance abuse issue and violence and behavioral issue at every grade level. The administration covers things up and overworks the teachers with minimum support but maximum micromanaging. Close Quote
