Summary

Houston Gateway Academy is a public charter school in Houston, TX, serving 613 students from Pre-K through 8th grade in a single-school district, Houston Gateway Academy Inc., where over 85% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. This school stands out as the only option in the area offering a continuous educational pathway through middle school, unlike nearby elementary schools like Sanchez Elementary and Southmayd Elementary that only go up to 5th grade. It also invests significantly more per student—$20,360 annually—nearly double the spending of nearby Cornelius Elementary ($9,436) and Park Place Elementary ($9,476), and higher than the charter Pstem Academy ($14,160).

However, the school has experienced a dramatic and concerning decline in its most recent performance. After consistently earning 4 or 5 stars from 2016 through 2024, it dropped to a 2-star rating in 2025-2026, falling from the 75th to the 37th percentile statewide. This sudden drop is not seen in nearby schools like Brookline Elementary and Crespo Elementary, which maintained strong 4-star ratings. The decline is especially sharp for male students, who plummeted from the 82nd to the 28th percentile, and Hispanic students, who fell from the 93rd to the 47th percentile. Test scores show alarming weaknesses in 3rd Grade Reading (23.53% proficient) and 4th Grade Math (29.79%), far below state averages and nearby schools like Crespo (69.44% in 3rd Grade Reading).

Despite these challenges, the school still has notable strengths. Its 8th-grade students achieved a 94.44% proficiency rate in Algebra I, nearly double the state average of 54.03%, and 7th graders performed well above state averages in both Reading (79.25%) and Math (86.79%). The high per-student spending raises questions about resource allocation, especially since Brookline Elementary achieves much better results with roughly half the spending. This suggests a need for a financial and programmatic audit to address the sudden performance cliff and ensure the school returns to its historical pattern of excellence.
