Summary

Horizon Montessori II - Stem Academy is a small, public PK-8 charter school in Weslaco, TX, serving 326 students and offering a unique, continuous learning path from Pre-K through 8th grade that most nearby elementary schools cannot match. This school stands out for its exceptional performance in upper-grade mathematics, particularly in 7th grade where proficiency rates are more than double the state average, and for its remarkable effectiveness with economically disadvantaged students, ranking in the 62nd percentile statewide for this group. With a low student-teacher ratio of 14.8:1, the school provides a more intimate learning environment than neighbors like Idea Academy Weslaco (22.5:1) or Sam Houston Elementary (20:1).

The school has undergone a dramatic turnaround, climbing from the bottom 7% of Texas schools in 2021-2022 to the 47th percentile in 2025-2026—a four-year recovery that is especially impressive given that over 82% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch. While math scores are a clear strength, reading proficiency remains a challenge, with 4th-grade reading at just 22.22% compared to the state's 53.04%. Science and social studies scores also show room for growth, and End-of-Course exam results in Algebra I and English I have been volatile, likely due to very small class sizes.

As part of the Horizon Montessori Public Schools district, which ranks in the top 36% of Texas districts, this school offers a distinct Montessori/STEM model that sets it apart from traditional public schools like nearby Cleckler/Heald Elementary. For parents seeking a school that excels in math, serves a diverse student body effectively, and provides a longer academic pathway through 8th grade, Horizon Montessori II is a compelling option worth exploring.

Open Quote I have three girls there and I think the smaller class rooms and more attention the kids get is good. I have been sending them there for several years and can tell you from having met most of the staff that they do care and will take the extra time with your child. This does not mean you get to be a lazy parent. I believe children will only excell when the parent is involved with home work, study, and praise. I know too that this school does take bullying seriously so if your kid is a little shy or just has trouble socially the students seem kinder there. The other parents seem involved too. It is not all about test scores. If all your school is teaching is just for those test, then they are not giving the kids as much as they need. The only reason I did not give a five is because the education does not compete with high dollar private, but for those that need free this is good. Close Quote
