Summary:

The three middle schools in the Rio Grande City Grulla Independent School District (Isd)Veterans Middle, Ringgold Middle, and Grulla Middle—serve grades 6 through 8 with enrollments between 632 and 734 students, and all face the challenge of high economic disadvantage, with over 94% of students eligible for free or reduced lunch.

Each school has a distinct academic strength. Veterans Middle is a powerhouse in Social Studies and Science, achieving a 51.23% proficiency rate in 8th-grade Social Studies and a 53.70% rate in 8th-grade Science, both well above state averages. Ringgold Middle stands out as a consistent performer and math leader, with the strongest 7th-grade math scores in the district and the lowest student-to-teacher ratio (10.9:1) alongside the highest per-student spending ($13,407). Grulla Middle is the most improved school, jumping from the 27th to the 48th percentile in state ranking over three years, and leads in 8th-grade reading with a 57.41% proficiency rate.

A standout finding is the exceptional performance in Algebra I End-of-Course exams, where Ringgold Middle and Grulla Middle both achieved 100% proficiency, more than double the state average. However, this contrasts with weak on-grade-level math, as 7th-grade math proficiency averaged only 20.31% across the district. A notable paradox exists between Ringgold Middle and Grulla Middle in 8th-grade Science, where Ringgold posted 50.44% proficiency while Grulla achieved only 22.79%, despite similar demographics and resources. All schools maintain near-zero dropout rates, a significant achievement given the high poverty levels.
