Austin Peay Elementary School is a PK–5 public school in Covington, Tennessee, serving 593 students as part of Tipton County Schools. This school has made one of the most dramatic turnarounds in the area: after earning a 1-star rating and ranking in the bottom third of Tennessee elementary schools in 2023–2024, it jumped to a 4-star rating and the 77th percentile statewide in 2025–2026—a climb of nearly 480 rank positions in just two years.

Austin Peay now exceeds both district and state averages in every subject. Math proficiency more than doubled from 30.3% to 62.5%, while ELA rose to 52.6% and science to 54.8%. This puts it far ahead of nearby Covington Elementary School, which serves a similar number of students in the same city but posted much lower proficiency rates (19% math, 22.9% ELA). Austin Peay also spends more per student ($14,568) than any other elementary in Tipton County, although Atoka Elementary School achieves a slightly higher ranking at a much lower cost per student.

The school's improvement has been broad-based: students from low-income families and African American students posted some of the largest gains of any subgroup over the past two years. The main challenges ahead are sustaining momentum in upper grades—math proficiency drops from 76.2% in 3rd grade to 50.0% in 5th grade—and reducing chronic absenteeism, which has improved from 28.2% to 15.8% but still sits above the district average. If Austin Peay can extend its early-grade success and continue improving attendance, it is well positioned to keep climbing.

Not a good school for minorities. They don't try to help them succeed academically. They put them in all these programs and you don't see any real improvements. They make the material soo hard and then only help certain ones. They believe in the buddy system there. Go to another school where they actually teach the kids. Close Quote

I have a daughter entering kindergarten at Austin Peay this year. She has never been in a learning environment until now. I have requested a certain teacher that over the years,due to having other children attend this school, we have come to have a great rapport. Unfortunately the principal does not feel this is reason enough to allow her to teach my daughter. Knowing this year will be emotionally trying for my child I know this teacher has the ability to help her strive without scaring her and ruining the experience of school from the the start. Who would deny a child the ability to strive from day one? The principal of Austin Peay, that is who. It is apparent to me she is not there for the soul benefit of the children. Knowing for the next four years I will not have any say in my child's education is completely unacceptable. Not only do the teachers have no voice, but you as parent will not either! I will no longer be recommending this school. Close Quote
