Summary

Miller Perry Elementary School is a small K-5 school in Kingsport, Tennessee, serving 225 students as part of Sullivan County Schools. Despite its district's middling 3-star rating, Miller Perry has been a consistent 4-star performer for nearly a decade, currently ranking 139th out of 1,019 Tennessee schools (86th percentile statewide) — a position it has held steadily, fluctuating only between the 83rd and 90th percentiles since 2020.

Academically, Miller Perry is a clear standout. In the most recent school year, 60.7% of students scored proficient in math, 67.0% in ELA, and 60.7% in science — roughly 20 to 27 percentage points above Sullivan County averages and well ahead of state averages. It outperforms every same-district neighbor, including Rock Springs Elementary School, Holston Elementary School, and Sullivan Gardens Elementary School, on all three subjects. Even against schools from the higher-rated Kingsport City Schools district, Miller Perry holds its own: its ELA scores are competitive with Andrew Johnson Elementary School and Thomas Jefferson Elementary School, and its overall profile trails only the very top area schools like John Adams Elementary School. The school's strongest subject is ELA, with consistent proficiency around 67% across all grade levels, and math proficiency grows impressively from 45.2% in 3rd grade to 73.5% by 5th grade.

Beyond test scores, Miller Perry shows strengths in areas that matter to parents. Chronic absenteeism sits at 13.6%, well below the district's 20.8%. The school's small size comes with relatively high per-pupil spending ($15,875) and a favorable student-teacher ratio of 14.7. Notably, the school serves male and female students nearly equally well, and has historically posted strong results for economically disadvantaged students — an important sign of schoolwide effectiveness. While a recent dip in math proficiency (from 70.4% to 60.7%) is worth watching, Miller Perry Elementary School remains one of the most impressive value-added stories in the region: a small, stable, high-achieving school in a district whose overall rating understates its quality.

Open Quote I moved from Florida. Miller Perry is one of the worst schools I seen. All year I have been trying to get the teacher to teach my son. I don't think she likes him so she don't care. Ms. Jordan is the worst teach there is. pray your kids don't get her. Close Quote
