Summary

West End Middle School in Nashville, TN, serves 327 students in grades 6–8 and is part of Metro Nashville Public Schools, a district that faces significant challenges but also contains some of the state's top-performing middle schools. West End ranks 236th out of 594 Tennessee middle schools, placing it in the 60th percentile and earning 3 stars for 2025–2026. That puts it solidly in the middle of a very stratified neighborhood: it outperforms nearby schools like H.G. Hill, LEAD Cameron, John Early, and Moses McKissack, but trails top local magnets like Meigs Middle, John Trotwood Moore, and Head Middle.

Parents will find several bright spots. English language arts proficiency (38.2%) is well above the district average (31.8%), and science (47.2%) and social studies (52.8%) are both above district and state averages. The most striking standout is Integrated Math I, where 83.9% of West End's 8th graders are proficient — far above the district's 28.2% and the state's 30.2%. Chronic absenteeism has also improved dramatically, dropping from 24.9% in 2022–2023 to 16.6% in 2024–2025, which is better than the district and state averages and most neighborhood schools like John Early (42.0%), Moses McKissack (28.2%), and LEAD Cameron (25.7%).

Still, the school has lost momentum since its 2023–2024 peak (78th percentile, 4 stars). Grade-level math proficiency has been stuck in the low 30s for three years, and 8th grade social studies (36.4%) is far below the state (47.6%). There is also a significant gap between student groups: economically disadvantaged students score in the 26th percentile statewide, while some other groups perform much better. The school's overall ranking is held up by strong humanities and sciences, but reversing the decline in math and closing these internal achievement gaps will be key to restoring its earlier trajectory. West End is a solid middle-tier school with clear strengths, especially for advanced math students, and it offers a much stronger educational environment than many of its closest neighbors.
