Summary

Hermitage Elementary is a public elementary school in Hermitage, Tennessee, serving 308 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Davidson County school district, which is ranked 122 out of 139 districts in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Hermitage Elementary consistently ranks in the bottom 20% of Tennessee elementary schools, with academic performance significantly below the state and district averages across all subject areas and grade levels. For example, in 2024-2025, only 31.5% of Hermitage students were proficient or better in Mathematics, compared to 42.2% statewide and 31.9% in Davidson County. The school also has high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 14.6% to 27.8% over the past few years, which is significantly higher than the state and district averages. Despite relatively high spending per student, ranging from $15,536 to $24,805, and a higher student-teacher ratio compared to nearby schools, Hermitage Elementary's academic performance remains a concern.

The nearby schools, such as Neely's Bend Elementary, McGavock Elementary, and Dodson Elementary, also perform below the state and district averages, but generally outperform Hermitage Elementary. In contrast, Stanford Elementary, a magnet school in the district, stands out with significantly higher academic performance, ranking in the top 15% of Tennessee elementary schools. Addressing the challenges at Hermitage Elementary will require a comprehensive approach that goes beyond just resource allocation and considers the underlying factors that contribute to the school's underperformance.

Open Quote My daughter was a year behind in 1st grade. Why did they take so long to tell me? She was held back. My son has autism. I didn’t know what autism was at the time. They told me he might have autism. Why didn’t they test him to see if he had it. I could have gotten him in ABA therapy sooner. I know a lot of good teachers have left because of the principal. It used to be a good school. Not anymore. Close Quote

Open Quote This used to be a wonderful school. However since the change in administration it is very clear things are going down hill quickly. Even the PTA president stepped down. The teachers are miserable, and that ultimately is affecting my kids. The school has a very high special needs population who are violent, yet they remain at the school putting other kids in danger. I love all the teachers there, but the principal needs to go. Close Quote
